The Power of Culture

Kibera, in the southeast of the Kenyan capital Nairobi, is one of the most infamous slum areas of East Africa. A sports programme keeps young people away from drugs and criminality.

As the ninth millenium objective, culture is prominently present in the conclusions drawn by the third United Cultures for Development conference. According to the Cultural Development Trust, which organised the conference, this is useful, since it makes it possible to put culture and development on the agenda without quickly falling into a political discussion.

Cultural entrepreneurship is rare in Mali, but it can be found. Young Alioune Ifra N'Dyae is brimming with plans. He already constructed a theatre and an editing studio, and now he wants to open a school.

Fashion is not only clothing: it is identity, attitude and socio-cultural communication. IN-MOD has therefore been inviting Brazilian designers, entrepreneurs, journalists and scholars to discuss the role of fashion and design in rising creative economies during the São Paulo fashion weeks since 2007.

In Segou everybody can enjoy the festival, which has a cultural purpose as well as an economic one.

The city authorities are doing everything possible to showcase both the city's Ibero-American character and the local cultural diversity during the festivities.
